Replacing Novell Print Server

Thanks in advance and I appollogize because of my English! ;-)

I'm migrating from a Novell 4.11 to a Windows 2000 Server enviroment but I
need to resolve some printing issue.

In Novell's enviroments you could define a print queue in the server and map
that queue using NPRINT to a printer a a client PC. Any clients PCs can
print to the server queue at any tima, it dosen´t matter if the printer who
realy print it is turner off, or even the PC where the printer is attached
is turned off, when you turn on the printer and the PC the print server star
to print all the jobs. It is transparent to the user.

In Windows 2000 you could share any printer in any machine to any client Pc
but if the user try to print to a printer while it is turned off he recibe
an error. If the network if more than 10 PCs and 4 printers it is very
difficult to ensure than the printer (or printer + pc) is turned on when the
user is going to use it.

I'm using the "NET USE" command to map printer to the LPTx ports but then
command return error if the pc where the printer to map is turned off.

Is there any solution to this problem, something like in Novell, where you
can define all the printers in the sistema and keep the jobs accepted until
the correct printer if on line.

I apologize again becuase of my English!

Thanks a lot!

Fernando.

This forum is for NetWare support, not MS Windows Server support but
here is a stab at it anyway:
Set up printer shares on your new Windows 2000 server, pointing to the
printers directly connected to the workstations.
Share these out to your workstations and have them print to the server
share, not the workstation printer shares.

I suggest you ask over in alt.comp.microsoft.windows if this answer
doesn't help.
