nMy laptop logon screen had changed this morning.
The fast user switching was gone. I tried to reset it in User Accounts,
but got a msg about some program interfering and RtlGina.dll needed to be
uninstalled. I dont remember installing anything but did see an MS update
running in the tray.
I tried restoring back several points, no help.
SO... I renamed rtlgina.dll to rtlgina.old
AND
now my computer wont start with a msg... "user interface failure...DLL
RtlGina.dll failed to load
Ive tried recovery console but can't get the rename command to work, or dont
really know exactly what to type... cant get SFC to run...tried chkdsk /r no

Jeff,
I am assuming that you are using a Linksys WUSB54 adapter. I have
that adapter and the GTGina.dll is in the installation cd for the Linksys
utility. It causes fast switching in XP to become locked. I contacted
Linksys tech support about 3 weeks ago and they were not aware(at the
time)of this incompatabilty. The solution;at this point; is to uninstall the
Linksys utilty and use Windows XP wireless utility to connect. The wireless
adapter works fine. I ended up downloading the driver from Linksys and
installing it only. Not the utility. It's just that .dll that is the the
cause. I didn't rename it,so you may want to delete that renamed one also.
Linksys is now definitely aware of the problem, and e-mailed me stating that
their "engineers" were working on a "fix". I hopes this sheds light on your
problem, this issue with the GTGina.dll occured to me using Linksys and I am
making the assumption that you are also.

Jeff,
Thanks for the reply. I did install a Netgear WG111v2 USB adapter, so that
explains the RtlGina.dll file. At least its not a virus.
BUT,
I still need to get Windows XP started to uninstall the Gina file, and can't
get past the "User interface Failure" msg and black screen on startup. I
need the exact command to rename the file from Rtlgina.old back to
Rtlgina.dll from the command prompt in Recovery Console.
Thanks

Another option would be to delete the GinaDLL from the registry. This can be
accomplished from a parallel installation of XP, or using the BartPE
Bootable CD.

How to edit the registry offline using BartPE boot CD ?:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/peboot.htm

And here is how you can delete the GinaDLL entry from the registry.

Jeff,
Glad I could help a little. From your response;I now see that the
*Gina.dll seems to be a general wireless issue;and not just confined to
Linksys.Don't know much about pc's but; you might want to try to boot in
"safe" mode?? It confuses me on how to do that;so somene may be better able
to help you with this part?

Thanks for your help.
I tried to use the Bart porgram but gave up when it warned me that an OEM
disk could cause problems...
So I reinstalled XP to my second partition and got it started, ininstalled
the problem Netgear WG111 adapter rather that working within the registry,
which has fixed most of my issues.
I now have two copies of XP in the startup options. I have renamed the
second copy to Windows.old. How do I remove the second copy on the startup
page so that windows will not stop here when starting?

Can I now delete the "new" second copy of Windows.old from my D partition?

Jeff,

The "new" second copy of Windows can be deleted (from D: partition). And the
reference in the boot.ini file can also be removed. You can use one of these
methods:

How to edit the Boot.ini file in Windows XP:

After I sent the post about removing the extra Line I found a Post from
10/17/04 by nutcase about removing the extra line using the startup and
recovery options on My computer-properties-advanced and removed the extra
line. Now I still get two choices but one now says Windows default.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

How can I get rid of the choice on bootup so it goes directly to WinXP ?

Jeff,
I have no idea in which partition you've installed Windows XP. Undo the
edits made, and delete the new installation of Windows. Then use MSConfig to
check invalid boot.ini entries (Ref: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/bootopt.htm )

I know this is an older thread, but I ran into the same problem as Jeff when
I updated my older laptop to XP. I received a similar error message and I
assume it is because of the Linksys wireless adapter. I followed the
directions for the BartPE link; I got to step 5 where it says to save the
hive but and error message appears that says that access is denied. Now I
followed the directions through skiping the section about saving and I found
a similar file path that is depicted in step 7 but there is no "Winlogon" and
so I cannot proceed to step 8. I do not know if the path that I found is the
right one seeing as I skipped the hive loading or if it is why it is missing
the "Winlogon" part of step 7. Any input you might have would be most
helpful.

Quick update,
I was able to load the right Hive (all a matter of following the right file
path) but when I got to the final step of renaming the userinit I found that
what was already there was what they were telling me to change it to. I
decided to try it but the result was the same. The error message that pops
up when trying to start windows is "DLL GTGina.dll failed to load". Again
any help would be great
