Error Renaming File/Folder

E

Edw. Peach

I have a chronic problem with my file renaming process. I do a lot of
digital photography and rename files often.

What happened this morning is typical. I opened my photo editing
program, no other programs opened and in fact I had not opened a
single program since last night. I renamed some files but when I got
to one, I got this error message.

"Error Renaming File or Folder
Cannot rename -----. It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."

As I said, nothing else is running. I am the only user on this
computer. (WinXP Pro.) If I reboot, the problem is resolved, but I
would like to find a better solution than rebooting.

Any suggestions?

Here's a copy of the readme from a program called Unlocker - it might help.

Using Unlocker
--------------

How often have you tried to delete or rename a file or folder and got
"Cannot delete xxx: It is being used by another person or program." ?

Unlocker is a tool which will help you removing this scandaleous Windows
bug.

Simply right click the file or folder and select Unlocker. If the file or
folder is
locked then a window will appear with a list of processes locking the file
or
folder. Select the locks and click Unlock and you are done.

It is recommended to Unlock wisely and to close open processes locking
files or folder if any, but if only Explorer.exe is the culprit, do not
hesitate ! :D
