Renaming File..

Sharon

I have just saved some photos on a disc and would like to open the file to
rename all the photos... I go to the photo...Click rename, type in name and
then it asks me to confirm file rename ( Are you sure you want to rename the
read only file? ). I click YES and then it says Cannot rename. Files on this
disc is read only. You can still copy new files to this writable cd, which
will replace files already on disc! I no longer have photos just what is on
disc. How can I rename my photos?

You copy them off the CD, rename them, copy them back to the CD.

Even CD-RW's do not work like a floppy diskette/hard disk drive. They are
still CDs.

Hi Shenan,
I have done exactly what you ask, but after I rename them, I
then have to write the files back to cd I am therefore left with the ones
that are read only and cannot be deleted. I am doubling up on the photos.
Please help me very frustrating.

Hi Shenan,
I just realised that my Cd's are not rewritable they are
CD-R. So could I get the information off the CD-R and save them on to CD-RW
and do all my changes that way? I have DVD rom and a DVD rewritable inbuilt
into hard drive. How can I make these changes to make my life easier. Much
appreciated by your help.

A CD-R is read only.
A CD-RW is re-writeable.

Once your burn a CD-R or a CD-RW, that's it. You can only copy the files to a hard drive.

Well, if it's a CD-RW, that's "not it", as she can still write to that CD-RW
again, right?
You can only copy the files to a hard drive.

At which point she could (if she wanted to) choose to reburn those "copied
to the HD files" to a CD-R or CD-RW, if she wanted. (But I think an
external HD enclosure is generally a better idea, and it's sure a LOT
faster. And I won't touch CD-RWs because they can be problematic - just
stick with CD-Rs, if ya need CDs).

What I mean by, "Once your burn a CD-R or a CD-RW, that's it." is that you cannot do anything with
the files on the disc, like renaming, except for copying. The file on the CD is as is, it cannot be
altered. Copying from a CD-RW to the hard drive, renaming and then copying back to the CD does not
alter the files on the CD. What happens is the old files are not included in the next session
history. So, the files are still there but you cannot normally see them.
