Unlocking files and folders after errors

I sometimes (very often in fact) do the mistake to try to rename or delete a
folder that's open in another window, and then naturally get an error
message that it is being used by another person or program, and that I must
close all programs that might be using it and try again. But even though I
close the offending window with the open folder, XP keeps harping that it is
in use and that my operation (rename/delete) can't be performed. The only
way to regain control over the folder/files then, is to reboot the entite
computer which is extremely inconvenient to put it mildly, when I'm in the
middle of a job and have 2 or 3 half finished Word documents open, or worse.
Rebooting and restarting everything, then becomes a quite time consuming,
error prone and annoying disruption. So I wondered if there is some way to
release the kind of locked state that are placed on all files and folders in
such circumstances, so that I can proceed to rename or delete them, without
having to reboot XP (I have pro-SP2)
