Windows XP Professional won't boot

Yesterday, when I tried to start up my computer, the bios ran, but after that
I had just a cursor on the screen. My first throught was that the hard drive
was fried. However, I used my Windows XP system disk to run recovery
console. Recovery console locates the Windows XP installation on my hard
drive and I can look at the directories on my hard drive. I ran chkdsk on
the hard drive and got a quick message back there were no errors. I then ran
chkdsk with the /p and received a message that I had some errors on the disk,
which isn't unusual. I then ran chkdsk repair, which took quite a while, but
eventually ran. I tried rebooting, but the same thing happened. Help. Does
anyone have any idea what to do?

Thanks.

Since you already know how to get to the Windows recovery console you
can do this. When in the recovery console type "Bootcfg /repair"
(without the quotes) and follow the prompts. This will scan your drive
for valid Windows installations and rebuild your boot.ini file. When
it's done just type exit to reboot.

it depends on where the issue with
the process of booting occurs.

you might try to initiate the recovery
console again and use the command

fixboot
