application error in start up

Stephanie

I seem to have some files that seem to have become corrupt and a bubble pops
up telling me to run chkdsk "rundll32 corrupt file". I am unable to delete
the files So I try to run Chkdsk. But everytime I try to run a chkdsk it says
I need to run it on startup but when I run it this way I get an blue screen
error message "Stop: c0000145 (application error) Click OK to continue" but
there is nowhere to click. I have managed to start up with a clean boot and
in safe mode. I also have uninstalled my third party antivirus. But the
chkdsk still wont run without causing the error. I looked up the errors in
the "event viewer" and the error properties are

Date: 6/19/2009 Source: crypt32
Time: 3:52:01 PM Category: None
Type: Error Event ID: 8

Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from:

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

But when I click on the link it says there is no additional information.

This seems to have started as a relatively small problem of a few files and
has become a much larger problem effectively preventing me from using my
computer.

BTW I have a DELL inspiron 1520 and am running XP SP3

Hi,
Make sure the Time and Date set correct in your Notification Area Tray.

Reboot your machine and see if that will help and run the chkdsk.
If that didn't help try to run this command in safe Mode:
chkdsk /f or the sfc /scannow and wait for it to finish checking your
system for corrupt files/folders.

I have followed the instructions but I am still having the same problem.
Chkdsk still will not run and I continue to get the c0000145 stop error on
startup. Also I am now having trouble starting up in safe mode as well. It
seems to be locking up while loading files while trying to startup in safe
mode. I also cannot run a defrag because it says it is trying to run chkdsk.

Thanks,
Stephanie

How much disk space you have?
How much RAM installed?
Do you have Other Accounts on this machine?

You can try to Repair the Defrag by doing the following:
Start In Safe Mode and Defrag your system.
Here some info on how to repair Defrag if it damaged:
Open a run command and register these DLLs:
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll

= Open Windows Explorer and locate this path;
C:\Windows\inf =in the right Pane/Window select dfrg.inf and right click on
it and select install

Hi Stephanie, First, while reading your descriptions, I keep getting a
picture in my mind of a snowball rolling downhill getting bigger and bigger.
If you don't have backup copies of your Valued Data, that needs to be your
chief concern. Instead of running Chkdsk from "C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator", try entering "cd\" (without quotes) and then:
C:\>Chkdsk /f

If you can get into Windows in Safe Mode, press Alt+Ctrl+Del for Task
Manager and see if you can isolate what process(es) might be locking your
drive from being scanned. Double click "My Computer" on the desktop, right
click C: and choose Properties. Then Tools, Error-checking, and Check Now.
Checkmark: "[*] Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors", and Start. If
it asks to reschedule, just say no, and start Task Manager again and see
whatever else might possibly be using the drive. Do you have a drive
activity light on the front of the computer? or can you hear the drive
humming? Is your power supply making any strange noises, or are fan(s) not
running normal speed? Are the internal power and data cables firmly plugged
into the hard drive? Have you physically disconnected whatever kind of
internet connection you have from your computer? (unplug phone cord or
cable?) Have you tried disconnecting all hardware from your computer except
monitor, keyboard and mouse? Do you use any Startup Scripts?

See KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317541
Cause: This behavior can occur if the Update Root Certificates component is
turned on and the computer cannot connect to the Windows Update server on
the Internet. The Update Root Certificates component automatically updates
trusted root-certificate authorities from the Microsoft Update server at
regular intervals.
Resolution: To resolve this behavior, you must connect to the Internet or
turn off the Update Root Certificates component. To turn off the Update Root
Certificates component, follow these steps:
1.. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2.. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
3.. Click to clear the Update Root Certificates check box, and then
continue with the Windows Components Wizard.

Did you get the Root Certificate Updates? and/or turn off the update?

MalwareBytes

How to Use Chkdsk in Windows XP
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/chkdsk.htm

"Chkdsk inspects the physical structure of a disk to make sure that it is
healthy. It can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters,
cross-linked files, and directory errors. These types of problems can arise
in a variety of ways. System crashes or freezes, power glitches, incorrectly
turning off a computer can all cause corruption in the file or folder
structure. Physically bumping or jarring a computer can cause the head that
reads disks to hit the surface and damage sectors. Once some sort of error
occurs it can propagate to create more errors so a regularly scheduled disk
checkup is part of good system maintenance. - Chkdsk can also serve as an
early warning that a hard drive is deteriorating. Disks gradually wear out
and sectors may become bad. If Chkdsk starts finding bad sectors, that is a
sign that a drive may need replacing. Unfortunately, many hard drive
failures are sudden but nonetheless Chkdsk is an important line of defense."

Other options you could try from Command Prompt:
C:\>chkdsk /X /F
C:\>chkdsk /R
C:\>chkdsk /X /R
The /F "Fixes errors on the disk. Does not scan for bad sectors".
The /R "Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information".
The /R includes /F and the R takes a very long time.
The /X is "NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary".

Caution: "Interrupting the Chkdsk process when it is used with the /F or the
/R switch is not recommended. The integrity of the disk can be compromised
by stopping the process. Do not start a scan if a thunderstorm is expected
and you are subject to power failures. I also strongly advise an
uninterruptible power supply to guard against short-term power outages or
fluctuations."

If you have a Windows XP installation disc, you might be able to boot from
the CD and get into Recovery Console, and run chkdsk from there. The console
only has 2 switches for chkdsk:
chkdsk C: /P
chkdsk C: /R
P is a plus version of F above. R is the same as R.

CHKDSK - Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chkdsk
"Sometimes the check after CHKDSK invoked with the /f or /r option on reboot
still fails, giving the error "Cannot open volume for direct access" on
startup, due to an application (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, and the
like) that locks up the partition before CHKDSK can access it. This has been
improved in Windows XP Service Pack 2, but still happens occasionally. One
fix is to set the /SAFEBOOT option in the boot.ini tab after running
msconfig.[2] This puts the system in a minimal/low-resolution mode.

"The results of a CHKDSK conducted on restart using Windows 2000 or later
operating systems are written to the Application Log, with a "Source" name
of Wininit or Winlogon and can be viewed with the Event Viewer."

That is all the info I have. Hope something helps.
