Removing pop-up browser ads

S

SQ

Running Mozilla Firefox (latest version) on Windows XP SP3.

Have annoying pop-up ads that open new browser windows constantly.

Tried about 5 different antivirus freeware packages to no avail. (AVG
8, Kaspersky, etc.)

Suggestions on how to stop this?

In addition to Buster's excellent suggestion, you may want to set Firefox to
block popups and clear your private data when you close the browser (both
under Options). I would also recommend you download and install AdBlock
Plus from Firefox's addons site.

Run these 2 Programs:

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode.

Do you mean pop-ups, or pop unders?

Firefox has a pop-up blocker by default, but a few get though that appear
under the active window.

I let them load, then block the pictures from that server, so the next time
it will be an empty window.

You should also consider "Flashblock" as an add-on. This prevents flash
animations from playing by default - most of these flash files are ads
anyway. A few are controls, but on average it's better with than without.

Run MALWARE scanners/removers!

Google:

Malwarebytes

Superantispyware

Install them. Run them.

I hope this is the right place to ask this question...if not, let me know.

I purchased my computer in February of this year. The only
malware/spyware/virus protection programs I have on this computer is CA
AntiVirus and Windows Defender. In addition, I use the firewall that is
built into Windows XP. I received advice back in February that that
having these programs in use on my system (always updated and running at
all times) was sufficient to protect against bad things invading my
computer. I get the feeling, after reading this thread, that maybe
something more is now recommended.

Please help me understand what is considered to be adequate protection
for todays computers. Thanks for any information sent my way.
