removal of ghost icon on desktop

I can't delete a "ghost" icon from my desktop. I believe it was created from
a text file that someone sent me. The ghost icon has 0 bytes. I cannot
rename it. When I try to delete it, I get an error message that states:
"cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk." I have done
a search of my computer for the source file to no avail. How can I remove
this icon?

Rightclick the drive icon in Explorer, and Properties, Tools tab, to use
"Error Checking" on the drive.

Well, I tried it again (error checking) and it had no effect. Someone who
helped me before I posted here also tried it. Any other ideas?
