Ok I can get this to work on my local machine but my remote machines tell me
that access is denied. I have tried disabling the firewall but to no avail.
Any ideas? Thanks again for the info

Is Remote Desktop enabled on the remote computer? Check by looking in system
icon in control panel, remote tab {I think do not have a XP machine in the
office just a few 2003 systems). NB XP Home does not have Remote Desktop
facility as far as I can tell.

I actually use PCA to control a network of computers 4 different locations

I've tried that now but still to no avail.

Check the firewall on the remote computer. Is the remote computer behind a
router because if it is you will need to open the port (3389)

Dick

I have tried shutting down the firewall to no avail. I use a Belkin Wirless
Router. I am running Zone Alarm Free version and cannot find a way of
opening ports. I seem to remember during setup I was asked whether dos
programs might be accessing the machine and would have probably answered no.
I could try uninstalling ZoneAlarm and reconfiguring it on re-installing
it.I will have to wait to get time to do that but any further pointers would
be gratefully recieved. Thanks for all help so far.

I am more concerned about what is at the "other" end, i.e. is the remote
computer behind a hardware/software/both firewall {most routers have inbuilt
firewall} In addition is the remote computer running XP Pro or XP Home? For
instance for my system to work I have had to open ports and do port
redirection as I have up to 6 computers at each location.

Zonealarm Free - Check Program Control, Programs to see if your program is
listed.

I doubt it has anything to do with the firewall. Access denied is probably
indicating a security issue. Does the user on the PC from which you are
invoking the shutdown have shutdown privileges on the target PC?

You may have a better idea than me {it has been a hard day!} but I do not
think that Chris can logon to the computer.

Ok, I have two machines one up stairs the other down. Both are running WinXP
Pro. I have Norton Internet Security on one and Zone Alarm Free on the other
the Belkin router has a hardware firewall. Which program should be listed.
The Shutdown Program?

I can browse the shared folders on both machines and print to each others
printers. My two machines are in a workgroup. Hope I have answered all the
queries.

You need Remote Desktop enabled on the computer you are trying to connect to
[Control Panel --> System --> Remote Tab].
You need to know the IP address of the computer you are trying to connect
to.
You need a valid logon id/password for the computer you are trying to
coonect to.

From the computer you are using to connect to the other machine run Remote
Desktop Connection [Programs --> Accessories --->Communications} When you
run this program you will get a dialogue box enter the IP address and press
Connect. You should be presented with a logon dialogue box which requires
username and password.

Hardware/software firewalls

My router with inbuilt firewall ignores local machines.
Zonealarm {which I have configured to connect to another computer} has a
setting in Program Control, Programs for Remote Desktop Connection -
mstsc.exe
Norton - no idea as I do not use it but remote desktop uses port 3389

Can I suggest that you disconnect from the Internet {pull the plug} and
disable both ZA and Norton and see if you can get a connection. If you can
then enable one of the firewalls and see if you can get a connection rinse
repeat. That way we can possibly isolate the problem.

I will be up for a few more hours, it is just after midnight here, so I will
watch for replies or you can contact me directly {my full forename} {funny

I'll give it a go when I get a minute. I'm soving a problem with a Primus
stove at the moment for my school pupils tommorow. I'll be in touch

Hi Dick,

Some sort of success. I can connect via Remote Desktop to both machines from
each other. Zone Alarm prompted me to allow access to the program enabling
me to identify it and then add it to Norton by prowsing in remote control.
Still can't shutdown the machine remotely though even with frewalls
disabled. When I try and browse for computers when I use the shutdown -i
interface I just get the message directory service is unavailable. When I
use the shutdown -s -m \\lleucu I get access denied. When I try to put in
the machine's ip address I get failed. I don't know if this helps to solve
the problem.

I have just realised that I can shutdown the machine from the other location
using remote desktop but it is a bit slow. If you have any other ideas about
the shutdown program then I would like to beat it rather than it beat us.
But the main objective has been achieved thanks for the help so far.
