Remote boot server configuration

I am trying to set up the PXE remote boot solution in a "strange"
network environment as described below...

The primary domain controller that also acts as the DHCP server is
Windows NT based (running SP6a) and cannot be changed. As the remote
boot software only installs on Windows 2000, or later, a Windows 2000
server machine has been installed as a member server within the
domain.

If the TFTP and PXE servers are installed onto the Windows 2000 server
then the boot ROM bombs out with a PXE-E55 error. "No ProxyDHCP reply
on port 4011".

Is it possible to get this configuration to work? If so do I need to
add any additional information to that given out by the DHCP server?
Is it correct to install both the PXE and TFTP servers to the Windows
2000 machine?

Any information or insights would be much appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

Andy.

Hi Andy.

I use a configuration like yours:
- WinNT4/SP6a Server as PDC with DHCP Server
- XP Prof./SP1 WS with RemoteBootManager installed from XPe CD2

This works fine for me!

I think there was nothing special to this configuration.
Did you activate the "Use DHCP port (67)" option of RBM ?

Hopefully this may help.

Hi Juergen,

Did you activate the "Use DHCP port (67)" option of RBM ?

Yes. I have activated this option and restarted the remote boot
service and still get the PXE-E55 error from the PXE boot ROM.

Would it be possible for you to check how you have your DHCP server
configured to see if there is anything that I need to include.

Thanks,

Andy.

Hi Andy.

My DHCP configuration is:
Scope
Start: 172.17.1.1
End : 172.17.1.89
SubnetMask: 255.255.0.0
Name : CAMERA-PC
The first two IP addresses are bound with "add reservation"
to the two connected PCs.

All other settings are default.

Cheers,
Juergen

Hi Juergen,
All other settings are default.

Have you added anything to the global configuration within the DHCP
server such as the "066 Boot Server Host Name"?

I'm sure that this ought to be easier to set-up than it is currently
proving to be!

Thanks again for your input.

Andy.

The DHCP option 60 (PXEClient) must be added to your DHCP scope whenever
your PXE Boot server is installed on the same computer as your DHCP server

Search the 'Net for PXEClient keyword

Also, make sure that your client computer is using the latest PXE code
available
