Remote Assistance - unable to connect via internet

Experimenting with Remote Assistance using the Ask for Assistance features.
XP Pro SP2 on both systems
Port 3389 is open on both firewalls
I have NAT on my side - using a static mapping on the other

We've tried sending e-mail requests and Windows Messenger - the requests are
received but cannot connect. With messenger I can see that he's accepted the
invitation but the connection is not made.

RA works on my internal network between systems but cannot get it to work
across the internet.
