Remote access

Our company has downsized and now I have to go "on the road" for business. I
now have to access my XP Pro work computer remotely.
I've read and tried many of the posts here but to no avail. I used to have
access from home when I had Win98 but I went to XP pro and do not remember
how I did it. I've tried to enter the IP address but I got an error of not
being able to connect.
What do I have to do to my work computer to make this possible? I know my
work computer IP address, Sub address, and the default gateway address. Which
one do I use? We have 4 computers on a network . I have admin permission on
my work computer.

You call the work computer using the public IP of the computer if its
directly connected to the internet or the public IP of any router the PC
is behind. If the PC is behind a router or any firewall, hardware or
software, you also need to open/forward TCP Port 3389.
