I bought a computer off ebay and found out that I have an invalid number. I bought Windows XP home version and my computer has XP Professional - Can I install XP home over XP professional or do I need to buy XP Professional?

You cannot install xp home over xp pro. Just boot to the xp home cd and
choose to format the drive and install xp home.

You'll need a "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and then perform a "Repair Install". Windows XP Home
Edition would require a "Clean Install".

Hello
You can do a clean install, the XP Pro will have to be deleted, you can do
this by booting from the XP Home cd and following the instructions.

Greetings --

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to
format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path
or technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Anyway, with a second-hand computer, particularly if acquired from
a stranger, your wisest course of action would probably be to format
the hard drive and start fresh. You don't want to get in trouble
because the original owner may have filled the hard drive with kiddie
porn, or have problems because the original owner downloaded/installed
viruses or other malware. Some unscrupulous people could even sell a
used computer preconfigured with the necessary key-loggers and spyware
to collect your personal information for future use.

You can't put Home over Pro. You would need to do a 'clean' install,
formatting the disk - You do it by setting BIOS to boot CD before Hard
disk, and then booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the
license agreement take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where,
hit ESC; select and delete the current partition with the Pro and make a
new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and try to make a new install over the top of the old one, and object
