reinstalling XP

i got an internet script error 216 while installing a hp
printer
HP says that it indicate a corrupted window
I am using XP home
can i re install xp without loosing all my data and
others install programs

You certainly can do a "repair install" of XP.
However, assuming that HP is correct, you can first do sfc /scannow if you
have an XP CD.

Per Michael Solomon:
Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

Failing that, you can try a 'Repair Install'

If neither of those solve the problem then a 'clean' install is probable:
