reinstalling Win XP Upgrade

I have a 4 year old Compaq Presario PC that came with Win Me - two years ago I upgraded to Win XP - I did the upgrade - not a clean install - about 6 months after I did the upgrade - I deleted the Win Me operating system to free up space on my hard drive. XP ran flawlessly - However recently I have been problems with Windows Explorer errors - you know windows has experienced a problem and needs to shut down - do you want to report etc. I have been toying with the idea of reinstalling - my question - can I do a clean reinstall - I do not want to install Win Me and then Win Xp. I have read that you can do a clean install but you have to be able to put in the CD with the qualifing operating system. Compaq does not provide a CD with the Win Me operating system - it is I believe in a zipped format on the recovery CD - so how would I accomplish a clean install.

Have you considered a repair install which will repair any problems and make
the operating system as it was without erasing any data, you will have to
visit the MS Windows Update site and download the updates again. You can do
a repair install with the original upgrade XP cd, without the need of a
qualifying OS cd. As always when doing a major upgrade or repair unplug all
devices except the Monitor, Keyboard & Mouse and backup all important data
in case something should go wrong.
