registry problems

My registry got corrupted and I can not longer get into windows XP sp2.

I am running windows xp sp2 and windows 2003 on this system and have 4 other
partitions with plenty of other free disk space.

I am a web developer and do most of my developing under windows xp as well
as school work. I do not want to lost all the sites I designed or schoosl
work.

I have copyied boot.ini, ntdlr and ntdetect.com to a floppy and that did not
help. I can not get into safe mode to run a restore It just hangs, it hangs
whenever I boot windows xp. I have tried the recovery console and did a
fixmbr and a fixboot and that did not work. While in recovery console I type
listsvc and it looks like all services are disable. I tried enable but it
tells me that it is not working. I tried an install with the r option and
still can not get logged in.

How can I fix the registry. I can not afford to lose the work I have done
on web sites, because they constantly have to be updated and I do this with
what I have on my system before uploading. All my applications would be lost
as well and some I no longer has access to. Also my school work.

Please help. This is killing me for the last two days I have tried
everything I know.

I tried that option last night at 1:00 in the morning several times and it
did not work. Since I can not logon on into windows xp I tried the manual
way and did the copies.

No, that will just run the XP version of Regedit on the 2003 registry (it should be compatible, but won't fix your problem).


One thing you could try (assuming you know exactly what you need to fix),. is to use the reg command. Assuming that XP is installed
in C:, you would boot 2003, then open a command prompt (Run->cmd.exe) and use this command:

reg load hku\zzz_hklm "c:\windows\system32\config\software"
reg load hku\zzz_hkcu "c:\documents and settings\###USERNAME###\ntuser.dat"

Of course, replace ###USERNAME### with whatever XP username is the damaged one.

Now open Regedit and navigate to HKEY_USERS\zzz_hklm or HKEY_USERS\zzz_hkcu or HKEY_USERS\zzz_hklm (whichever one(s) has a problem).
Then make your fixes. Note, that if you have a REG file that you want to use, you must change the keys in it to reflect the loaded
USERS keys.

After you've made your changes, navigate to the roots again (HKEY_USERS\zzz_*) click File->Export, then save the key(s) that you
have changed to a file as type "Registry Hive Files". Repeat for the other if needed.

Finally, close Regedit, and back in the command prompt, type:

reg unload hku\zzz_hklm
reg unload hku\zzz_hkcu

Now navigate to "C:\Windows\System32\Config". Rename SOFTWARE (it's a hidden file) to SOFTWARE_ and move the file you exported to
this folder and name it SOFTWARE. Repeat for "C:\Documents and Users\###USERNAME###\NTUSER.DAT" and it's exported equivalent if
needed.

Now reboot into XP. It will load the registry from the new hives, which are just the old ones, with the new modifications/repairs
that you've made.

If your corrections were correct, then it should boot up fine. If not, then check your corrections and try again (with either the
originals or the modified ones, but make sure to keep each version-at least the originals-until you're done). By mounting the XP
registry in 2003, you can use Regedit to search for whatever messed XP up.

I am not sure what was destroyed. Is there a way to just set the
registration back to what it was.

Would a back up to another partition, do a reinstall and then do a restore
fix this problelm?

I am more willing to do this if it would work.

The registry has changed a lot since installation. Updates, software installation, tweaks, configurations, settings. Using a copy
of the post-install registry might allow it to run (although it's quite likely to crash), but certainly would not be a good idea.
If all you want to do is to get it running (preferrably in safe mode) long enough to backup your files, then it's worth a shot, but
you can already do that safely from 2003. If you just want to get it running again, then it's probably safer to do a repair-install
instead.

Yes it would; C:\Windows\System32\Config\AppEvent.evt and C:\Windows\System32\Config\SysEvent.evt. You can load them into the 2003
Event Viewer if you know what you're looking for, or attach them (compressed if necessary) if not.

Yes, it runs through the drivers it seems like before I get to the splash
screen. The only event log that it will let me view is the application event
log. I copied most of it that happened on that day in this file. I will not
let me get into the rest of them and tells me they are not system 32 files.
Should I clear all them out and try to log in again and then review the logs
again?

Yes, it runs through the drivers it seems like before I get to the splash screen.

??? When booting in safe mode, it shows the driver list, then shows the black-screened XP logo, then hangs?

The only event log that it will let me view is the application event
log. I copied most of it that happened on that day in this file. I will not
let me get into the rest of them and tells me they are not system 32 files.
Should I clear all them out and try to log in again and then review the logs again?

Chances are that the event logs have gotten corrupted. How big are they? Luckily, I'm currently writing a Windows event log
reader/writer, so I can repair and read it. The system log is the one that will likely have the critical piece.

Ah, great. I've checked it and it is in fact corrupt. Whatever has messed up your copy of XP may very well be what corrupted the
event log. I've got a few more hours of work today, then I can take a proper look at it and hopefully help you diagnose the
problem.

I'm also glad to have an opportunity to see another event log since I've been testing my program with only my own so far.

I have been out all day so no problem. I am not touching windows xp until I
hear back from you.

I just hope it can be fixed. I will telll you that I made a back up of my
drive C: on another partition that I created on this hard drive.

I have two hard drives that are raid drive, so I had plenty of space for that.
