Pagefile.sys error

When booting my XP Pro wants to run check disk and then hangs saying
pagefile.sys nonvalid link.

I can stop the check disk and continue into Windows but the machine does not
run properly.

Looked how to fix the error; tried to boot into recovery console and rename
or copy a file over the pagefile hopefully so I could delete it but I could
not rename or copy over it. Even tried to change its attributes could not.

Tried to run Chkdsk /r from the console but it did not help.

I cannot boot into safe mode it just hangs.

I need ideas as to fixing this problem
Thanks

It is not a good sign that XP wants to run chkdsk before bootup.
What was the reason given for you not being able to rename the file? What
was the reason give that you could not change its attributes (permissions?).
Without the error codes, we are flying blind.

But, what I would do is to insert my BartPE CD into the CD drive, and boot
it. BartPe ought to be able to delete the pagefile. But, I would still
find a replacement drive.

Sounds like the Recovery console is actually using the pagefile, which would
prevent you from making changes to it.

Boot from a non- XP disk, such as a Linux or perhaps BartPE CD, or just
attach your drive to another XP system. You will be able to delete the
pagefile.

I agree that it might be prudent to consider another hard disk, especially
given their current low cost. Where I am, a 250 gig hard disk is about
$70.
