Theres a few cmds you'll need to know before re-entering recovery thru
the xp cd,go to microsoft.com,search,type:307545
They're a set of cmds that repair a corrupted registry, preventing xp from
starting. If you ever need help in recovery, type:HELP for cmd options.
Good-luck with it !

Hi,
Thanks for your help. However most of the fixes mentioned assume i have
access to the recovery cd i got with the computer. Unfortunately i
can`t even get access to this. I just can`t get into anything, not even
to format the HDD.

You mean you can't even boot to the CD instead of Windows?
You have more of a problem than just the registry. You don't need the
registry to boot to the recovery CD. Check your BIOS and see if you have the
option set to Boot to CDROM as a first, second, or third choice. Try making
it your first choice and see if you can boot
to it then.

Any luck yet? I have the same problem- have tried all recovery, repair methods I am aware of without success. The furthest I seem to be able to get is a few seconds of the welcome screen and then it shuts down and goes back to that lovely blue registry error screen. Any suggestions would be helpful if you've found the problem!!

HI,
I have set the bios to boot from only the CD. It boots from the cd and
says loading windows, i see it loading all sorts of system files. Then
the blue screen appears with the "registry error stop 0x00000051
(0x00000003, 0x00000003, 0x00000000, 0xE1102000" and it will not go any
further.Any advice please.

Are you using your recovery CD? Sounds like it is trying to start in
Safe mode, not from a recovery Cd.

HI,
I have altered the BIOS to only boot from the CD rom. When i put the
recovery cd in and boot up it says booting from CD, it gives me the
windows XP startup screen then goes into the blue screen. I wonder
could it possible be a faulty hard drive?

I doubt it if it is the hard drive. Usually they make a clunking sound when
they go bad. What puzzles me is why it goes to the XP startup screen if it
is booting off the recovery CD. Is that a recovery CD from the computer
maker or is it a WinXP CD?

It is the recovery cd from the computer manufacturers. When the XP
startup screen appears it stays for about 30 seconds then i can hear a
clunk in the hard drive, that is when i get the blue screen.

Well if you are hearing a clunk on the drive. It is more than likely
dead.
The faulty drive is a Maxtor built on the 11th October 2002. I have
removed this drive and put in a good drive with Windows 98SE installed
on it. This drive works O.K.
What is confusing me is that i went to the Maxtor website and D.L a
drive diagnostic program, and ran it. It says the drive passed ALL the
tests. I am now confused.

Another strange thing, the drive is a 60GB. The BIOS is showing the
number of cylinders as 29437, yet the Maxtor diagnostic software is
showing the number as 119150. I am confused.

So now you have a working computer with Win98 on it?
If so I would put the drive back in and make it a slave and delete the
partition. Then repartition it and see what it gives you.

Well, i have put the drive in a Win XP machine as a slave. I can access
all the files on the drive. So i assume that it must be a corrupt os
installation and not the HDD. I have a recovery disk with the fault
comp, if i formatted the HDD should the recovery disk re install
windows XP. I am a bit nervous about formatting the hard drive and then
finding i can`t re install it via the recovery disk.

Hi Striker and Nancy,
I have sorted the problem out. It looks like the master boot record
was corrupt. I had to put the drive into another Windows XP machine (as
a slave) and format it. I then put it back into its original machine
and started up the recovery cd. This time it just re installed window,
and everything is now perfect. For some reason it looks like when the
mbr is corrupt you can`t even bootup from the recovery cd. Very
strange. Anyway hope this helps Nancy, and good luck, let me know how
you get on.

Hi Striker,
I would just like to thank you for all your assistance with this
problem. It was very much appreciated. Thanks again.
