Registry editor disabled

Hello.

My godparents have asked for my help in fixing their Win XP home machine.
When trying to install Yahoo!Messenger they get the error message 'registry
editor has been disabled' (details below). I suspect SP 2 as the culprit.

Can anyone here help me diagnose the problem? I think there is probably a
registry value somewhere that needs changing, but it could be something to
do with permissions.

Thanks,

Liz

The Problem. Messenger worked on this machine fine since late July purchase,
until around beginning of Oct 04. Then it showed the Runtime error displayed
below.

We tried uninstalling it, and re-installing .... However,

After downloading Messenger ( Ypager
version 6,0,0,1788) to program Files\Yahoo\new Folder, Windows XP Home
indicates the registry editor has been
disabled. There appears no way of
ENABLING the registry editor.
The download then claimed to have
been achieved successfully - but upon
starting the application the following
errors are received in order-

Runtime error! Program c:\program
files\Yahoo\new Folder\YPager.EXE -
This application has requested the
Runtime to terminate in an unusual
way. Please contact applications
support team for more information.

After clicking OK the following
appears -

Y! TrayWnd: YPager.exe - Application
Error
The instruction at 0x00403f24
referenced memory at 0x00e91f74. The
memory could not be 'read' Click on OK
to terminate the program.

No further progress was therefore
possible as the programme terminates
when OK was clicked.

Liz,

Is this computers Anti-Virus software up-to-date? I would also try a
"checkdisk at start-up" on the computer to see if this may help too. I
suspect that this computer may have picked-up a virus or trojan horse that
may affect access to the computers registery. If these options do not
pan-out, you can always use the Windows System Restore Option and set the
computer back to a date prior to Oct 04.

I am assured that it is, but I have asked for another virus scan using an
online virus scanner, just to be sure.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind.
