Recovery tools in event of Windows XP blue screen of death

What recovery tools.are needed in the event of a software failure and I need
to boot to Windows and/or rebuild system.
To be able to test hard drive for hardware problems
To boot into Windows from a CD to do a system restore when F8 doesn't work
Thanks.
 
A win cd or recovery cd, though if its a recovery cd which only does
destructive recovery you will lose everything on the PC.
Making the recovery Consol an option available to your boot up
A bootable floppy/cd from the HD manufacturers site containing the HD test
utilities.
An Image of your sytstem located on other media
Backups of your data on other media
Generally its not software failure but HW failure
