Recovery Console

Hi,

I am trying to add the Recovery Console to my startup options on the boot
menu. I have done this before but am now having a problem. I inserted the
Windows XP CD in drive f.

At a command prompt I type
f:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

I get the following message:
Setup cannot continue because
the version of Windows
on your computer is newer than
the version on the CD.

This is not true. I have however installed Service Pack 2 and assume this
is the reason for the error.

Anyway around this error or another way to install the recovery console as a
menu item on the boot menu?

Thanks in advance for your assistance,

LeBaron

Installing SP2 makes the version on your computer newer than the version on
the CD. Thus, the message is correct.

Slipstream the SP2 patch together with the original CD.

If you do not know how to "slipsteam" SP2 as Jim suggested these links

3 ways. one obviously doesn't apply now.
1) install recovery console before SP2
Note:could uninstall SP2. install recovery console. then reinstall SP2
2)install recovery console with XP with SP2 cd
3)install recovery console with slipstream XP Sp2 cd

Thanks for your tips on slipstreaming.

I slipstreamed SP2 with WinXP Home and then used the resulting CD to load
Recovery Console and it all seemed to work fine - when I booted my system,
the choice between loading WinXP and loading the Recovery Console appeared.
However, I could not get Recovery Console to work.

The reason I got into Recovery Console in the first place was because I need
to repair my master boot record (MBR). I currently am unable to boot from
my hard disk so I usually boot from a Symantec recovery CD. However, I can
also boot from the WinXPSP2 disk

If I boot with the Symantec disk and select Recovery Console, I get the
messages "Setup cannot load the keyboard layout file KBDUS.DLL. Setup
cannot continue. Shut down or restart your computer."
Whereas if I boot with the WinXPSP2 disk and select Recovery Console, I get
a Windows Setup screen saying files are loading. So, I stop it by cutting
the power.

My problem could be due to Recovery Console not installing properly. But, I
am more inclined to think it is because I'm booting from CD's.

Any suggestions as to how to debug the problem would be appreciated.

WHY would you ask a question on a OP that is a month old??
Several (+100) post per day. who is going to look at something this old??

Why do you stop the Win XP/SP2 Recovery Console?
It's only loading files into a temp directory or ram!!
Not installing recovery console unless you enter such a install/copy command.
Not going to hurt your computer!!

Run Windows Recovery console!!
Type: bootcfg /rebuild (at command prompt.)
