Recovery Console will not start

Hello!

One of my son's little brat friends tried to install some software on my
son's pc. XP will not start (in any mode) and when I try to access
c:\windows through the Repair Option from the original install disks, the pc
reboots. If I try re-installing XP, I get the blue stop screen indicating a
registry error.

Thanks!

Pull the data off by either slaving the hard drive in a working XP box
or by using a Knoppix or a Bart's PE. Here's information about Knoppix:

An easy way to retrieve Windows files is to boot with Knoppix, a Linux
distro on a live cd. You will need a computer with two cd drives, one
of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to
hold your data. To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast
Internet connection and third-party burning software. Download the
Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then
boot with it and it will be able to see the Windows files. If you are
using the usb thumb drive, right-click on its icon (on the Desktop) to
get its properties and uncheck the box that says "Read Only". Then
click on it to open it. Note that the default mouse action in the
window manager used by Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open instead
of the traditional MS Windows' double-click. Otherwise, use the K3b
burning program to burn the files to cd/dvd-r's.

Once you've rescued the data, format the drive and clean-install
Windows.

Before the clean install, think about performing a burnt sacrifice using
your son's friend. You'd probably get in trouble if you actually did it
but you will feel better if you fantasize about it.

No children were harmed in the making of this newgroup post. ;-)

Hi,

What happens when you try to boot the "Safe mode with command prompt"?
What is the specific error message about the registry?

This may help:

Hi Rick ... trying to boot in "Safe mode with command prompt" causes the
machine to reboot.

If I attempt to repair OR install XP from the original CD, I receive the
blue stop screen, with something like 'Windows encountered an error .. blah,
blah, blah ... "Registry Error" (not additional information) Then wording
about possible new hardware or software being installed... try uninstalling
.... blah, blah, blah ..

Technical Info: ***Stop 0x00000051 (0x00000003, 0x00000000, 0xE1106000)
at the bottom.

Thanks!

It had occured to me to make him a human piñata, and give the neighborhood
kids cattle-prods .... I think slaving the drive will be the easiest!

Thanks!

Hi,

0x51 is often hardware related. It is possible that your son's friend is not
to blame, he may simply be the victim of ram gone bad. I would run a
software check first. If you want to check the memory, there are free
programs here:

http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download.asp
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Also, during setup, make sure any BIOS-based antivirus detection schemes are
disabled and that the system is not overclocked.
