Recovery console under sp2

Sorry to raise this vexed subject again!

Microsoft support article 900871 is very clear and helpful, but I can't
make it work.

When I run windowsxp-kb835935-sp2-enu it extracts ok to xpsp2, but then
fails to integrate. The message is "all the files are not available.
Make sure they are in i386 etc etc"

I have re-downloaded the network installatioon package, and checked
everything (I think??), but no joy.

Any advice please?

Nog,

Did you follow step 2 in the beginning?

2. Copy the files and folders in the i386 folder from the original Windows
XP CD to C:\XPCD\i386

Don't know for sure but I am thinking that you may have moved everything
from the i386 folder to the xpcd folder instead of moving the i386 folder so
it is in the xpcd folder. In other words when you open the xpcd folder on
your computer you see everything in the i386 folder instead of just seeing
another folder named i386 under it. I am just speculating. That is what I
would assume the problem is. Try just having the i386 folder in its entirity
from your xp cd under the xpcd folder. Then to make recovery console work
with sp2 files follow the steps in this webpage...

Good Luck and if you still need help reply and be more specific.

Hi Kemco.

I know that after even 40 years I still need to be told to RTFM, but I
think I got it right. Anyway I tried your suggestion, and got a
different error message.

Here are my notes. I know I don't have to have recovery console, but it
bugs me not to be able to get it! So any suggestions from anywhere
would be gratefully received.

SP2 integrate notes. 02/11/2006 18:30:14

1. clear xpcd

2. drag i386 from sp1 release CD to xpcd. (I take it that we just need
xpcd\i386, not \i386\i386)

3. run kb835etc

4. we get :

SP2 setup message box
"This SP can't be integrated into a destination that also has
integrated updates"

5. do 1 and 2 again

6. clear i386 from xpsp2

7. try again. Time 1738

8. Same again. Re 900871 - method 1, para 7:
a) Wizard does not start - just the message.
And b) What is the "XP Installation folder"? Perhaps this is where the
trouble is?

9. Can't find anything which looks like such a folder, nor any "log"
files which might have some history.

10. Thinking about 4, the command line implies we are integrating into
xpcd, which only has stuff direct off the CD. Could Dell have done
something funny, say when installing SP1?

Thanks again
David
