Installing Recovery Console for SP2

Tookelso

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP Home Service Pack 2, and I'd like to use the
Recovery Console.

Here's my plan, please tell me if I'm going wrong somewhere:

My Install/Recovery CD is from 2001, and the knowledgebase article here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898594/
says that it won't work with Service Pack 2, so I'm not even going to
try my CD.

Method 3 in the article above says that I should download the install
files for Service Pack 2, and then integrate them into my setup files.

I plan on doing this by following the instructions here,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871/

but I do NOT intend on performing step #9 in Method 1, because that
step sounds like it will start the upgrade. Since I've been running
Windows Update, this sounds like a bad idea.

So after "integrating" the Sevice Pack 2 setup files, I intend on
running step #3 of Method #3 on this page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898594/

I'm thinking this will update my Recovery Console to Service Pack 2.

Am I missing anything? Should I run step #9 in Method 1 from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871/ or am I right in skipping that
step?

Thanks in advance,

Question #1: What is it that you want the Recovery Console to do for
you? The recovery console is intended for advanced users and thats why
Microsoft does not install it by default. You have to be very
comfortable with command line instructions to use it.

Question #2: What is wrong with your system that leads you to believe
you need the Recovery Console?

Did your system start out as Windows XP Sp1 and then you upgraded sometime
to SP2?
If so, do you have a C:\i386 folder?

Thanks for the replies so far.
Question #1: What is it that you want the Recovery Console to do for
you?
I was afraid you'd ask that :)

I want to install dual-boot Ubuntu Linux, and the installer says that
there is a problem with my FAT16 MBR. I found posts on Ubuntu Forums
which said to run FIXMBR, which is a function of the Recovery Console
Did your system start out as Windows XP Sp1 and then you upgraded sometime
to SP2?
I bought my machine in early 2002. The installation / recovery CD does
not indicate Service Pack 1, so I assume that it was an early version
of Windows XP.
If so, do you have a C:\i386 folder?
Yes, and I checked the winnt32.exe file, and it is dated 2001, so I
doubt that my I386 directory was updated when I upgraded to Service
Pack 2.

Thanks for any further advice. I'm a computer programmer, so don't be
afraid to hit me with the tech stuff----

Thanks,
