Uninstall SP2

Hi all and thanks for reading.
I think that by mistake I had to install again sp2 while I didn't unistall
it before doing so. I followed some instruction that an ewido software
representative gave me to check if I had a trojan on my system32 folder. He
said please boot from a Windows (Boot)CD, enter the Recovery Console

(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307654) and rename
this file:
C:\Documents and Settings\Walid\Local Settings\Temp\hsperfdata_Walid\2336
to 2336.bak and then send us a copy of this file.

So I went to this link

occured "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your
computer is newer than the version on the CD". as a matter of fact my winXP
cd is SP1 so I clicked on this link to solve the problem
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898594/ and I choose method 3. So I followed
the instruction on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871/ on How
to integrate Windows XP Service Pack 2 files into the Windows XP installation
folder. I used method 1.

the problem now is that my computer has a weird graphic, I can't connect to
the
internet and it looks like win98. So I think that I installed WINDOWS XP
again while my PC already had winXP...

So I tried to unistall SP2 but I don't have in Add\Remove, nor I have
$NtServicePackUninstall$, etc....I tried evrething....Please help! What
should I do?

If you decide to uninstall SP2 just for improving the graphics quality I
think its not a good idea. You need to update your graphics drivers and
graphics controller versions. Most probably those are not suiting with sp2.
Have you updated all hotfixes and hardware updates from Windows update?

Well, for uninstalling SP2, you wont be able to do that if you have
installed XP from the cd integrated with SP2. SP2 has become a part of the
OS. You have to uninstall the OS completely.

well it looks like you have things pretty well messed up
so you will need to boot from your XP cd and perform a repair installation.

your data and apps should remain in place...
but all updates will be gone...
then i'd go right to sp2

I tried to read and make sense of that - I really did.. But the timeline is
all out of whack and the descriptions are sketchy at best. What it sounds
like to me is that you got in over your head and instead of seeking more
help - you started digging into the bottom of the pool. You even brought
your own pick-axe to get through the concrete. You tried pretty hard too -
it was actually a decent attempt - looks like you even got the water to
start draining out of the pool.

First - that whole first paragraph.. I don't get it. You thought you had
to reinstall SP2 again.. btu you didn't.. but you did.. and so you talked
to someone at ewido software who told you to (for some reason) boot into
Recovery Console and rename a single file and that would check if you had a
trojan?! Wow - I almost stopped reading there - I don't know (first of all)
why you would thought you needed to reinstall SP2. I don't know why you
thought you first had to uninstall SP2 to reinstall SP2. I don't know how
you got directed to ewido software to troubleshoot trouble you seem to
indicate centered around the reinstallation of SP2. I don't know how you
(or they) got to this conclusion of renaming some obscure file name in
recovery console and sending them the copy of this file from what is
obviously your temporary files (in your profile) would tell them if you had
a trojan or not... That whole thing is a hodge-podge of missing information
and inconsistencies.. Can you please go back and explain in more detail -
because it doesn't get better after that. =)

The recovery console can be an intimidating place - thus the warning in the
very first link you presented:

"However, Microsoft recommends this method of system recovery for advanced
users only."

That should have been a hint that perhaps - if you did not feel comfortable
there - you should either seek another solution and/or bring it to someone
who you know would understand it.

Your comprehension seems to be decent - because you say that didn't work and
you found the next article - which told you that you needed an SP2
integrated Windows XP CD.. You even followed the link from there and I
suppose (some details in the timeline are missing here) you created your own
SP2 integrated CD? Good job if so! There are a lot of people that find
that difficult.

But then there is this HUGE gap in the timeline - I don't know what you did
then. *If* you created the SP2 integrated Windows XP CD and you went into
the recovery console - and *if* you did what the ewido software people told
you to and nothing else - then I don't know how you would get to the point
you are at.

Then it gets more confusing..

All of a sudden you are trying to uninstall SP2.. I still don't get that
one.. Who told you to do this? Why did they tell you to do this? Why are
you listening to them?!

I'd love to help - but through all that I don't know WHY you did any of it -
I don;t know what trouble you were having that would cause you to go through
so much more trouble to get in a worse shape than you were obviously.

Help us help you... Take some time to organize and explain everything. =)

Hi all and thank you for your time. I understand that the description of my
problem is some parts unclear, but excuse my self but English, as you
noticed, is not my first language and I'm right now typing from a 10 years
old laptop with Italian keyboard and a 10 inch screen!!! But most important,
I don't think I quite understood what messed I did. So I'll try to explain it
better...but Irepeat I really don't know what I did! And I spent the all day
back up my data..and spent a 100 bucks to buy an external hard disk!!!

From my understanding this moron from ewido asked me to boot from my windows
cd and go to recovery console....and I never did that in my life! So he
suggested to visit this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654 on How to
install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP. So I went there and I
followed the steps...but "Setup cannot continue because the version of
Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD." Right, I have
the cd of windows with sp1...so I went to this other link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898594/ to solve....to try to solve the
problem and I used method 3 "Method 3: Install the Recovery Console by using
files in the Windows XP SP2 Installation folder". But in first step it ask me
to create a sp2 folder so I went to this other link

Pack 2 files into the Windows XP installation folder" and I followed method
1. I did all the steps untill step 9 where it says "After you complete the
integration process, run an in-place upgrade to Windows XP SP2. To do this,
click Start, click Run, type C:\XPCD\i386\winnt32, and then click OK." And
this is what I did...sorry guys to keep it that long but that's the only way
to explain the mess I did...now the grapich of the computer it's ok...I can
do basically evrething except connect to the internet..in fact if I try to
click on the internet provider icon on the desktop, nothing happens, and if I
try to click on Start-Connect to the computer freezes for about 10 sec and
nothing happens. I try also to click on the folder "Network Conncetions" from
Control Pannel but it's empty. So I tried to reinstall my access manager
internet provider "Sympatico" but it didn't work.

That's about it....I really, really, really appreciate your time and help
guys, I hope I clearly explain the mess I did.

New thing...if I go to control panel and I click on the System icon I see
that on the general tab I have Windows XP Service Pack 1. But when I try to
install XP from my Sp1 cd it says that my cd has an older version than the
one that I have installed on my Pc. One important thing that I forgot to
mention is that during the setup of XP I had to skip some files such as
MSJAVA.ddl, clspack.exe, iuctl.ddl, ipp_0011.asp, etc...that's probably what
corrupted my windows xp. Now the question is
should reinstall from scratch windows XP and therefore loosing all my data
(sigh) or try to....I don't know.....

Hello again guys...I'm happy because I'm writing you from my desktop
again!!! I solved the problem by clicking on WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU file
that I download on my hard disk...basically the upgrade to SP2 and
"magically" evrething is back to normal!!! Thank you very much for your
help...and I'm very sorry for wasting your time with this stupid thing...and
for my incomprensibile English! Now it's time to go to bed..it's 2:45 and I
woke up at 7!!!
