Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

or, you may use recovery console to fix the problem.
boot XP CD, run the Recovery Console and from the command prompt, run:
Copy X:\I386\ntldr C:\
remove the CD and restart the machine.
