Can't install Recovery Console

I tried installing the Recovery Console to the hard drive recently but I got
the 'Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD.' error.

To overcome this I followed the instructions at this website
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/898594/

After making the directories as indicated and downloading the (200MB+) file,
the Integration process seemed to go well. When all was said and done and the
'In Place Upgrade' started I got an error that said something like 'This
version of XP cannot be upgraded'. Then the process wanted my original CD
number and looked like it was going to do a 'Full' install from my original
CD instead of an upgrade, so I cancelled it.

My question is this. Why wouldn't it let me do the upgrade?

The best way to get around this problem is to create what's
called a "slipstreamed" installation CD. Basically what you do
is copy the files from your original XP installation CD to a
folder on your hard drive, integrate the SP2 files into that
folder and create a new installation CD which will now include
SP2. Take a look here for more info on this procedure.

follow this procedure:

Following up on my earlier response, the reason you ran into
trouble may have been because you left out the /cmdcons switch.
To install the recovery console all you have to do is go to
Start -> Run and enter the path to your I386 folder followed by
winnt32.exe /cmdcons. For example, if your CD drive is D then
the command would be

D:\I386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

Even if the recovery console is not installed, it can be accessed by booting
the XP installation CD.
