I have the blue screen of dealth - system error. When I run the system recovery in windows xp, I get a request for the admin password - laptop is not accepting my password (which I know is accurate). When I look up possible fixes, it directs me to hot fix Q308402 - which directs me to call microsoft - to pay for a service call.

Q308402 hotfix stats it is a service pack problem but how can i run the service pack for windows xp if I can only boot to dos - HELP!!!!!!!!!

Are you running XP home? I had a similar problem and after digging through
MS it said that System Recovery was made for XP pro and may or maynot work
on XP home. When you get stuck at the password no matter what you do I
think you have one that won't work. You are suppose to be able to fix it
with a service pack or follow some long instructions and add the service
pack to your windows install disc and make a new boot disc or someother way.
None of them worked for me I ended up doing a complete reinstall of XP home.

Greetings --

The password being requested is that of the built-in Administrator
account, not the password for any other administrative user accounts
you may have created. Unless you've deliberately set the
Administrator's password via the Management Console (_not_ the Control
Panel), it's probably still blank. WinXP Pro asks you to set the
Administrator's password during installation, but WinXP Home doesn't.

I accidentially stumpled on the solution - instead of the recovery console, I did select enter for windows xp install and it asked to do a repair and it worked.

Thanks.
