Recovery Console password error.

I am using Windows XP Home edition. When I attempt to run the Recovery
Console, I am asked for the Administrator's password. Since I have never
password protected any account on this machine, I just hit return. However,
the program will not accept this, and keeps asking me for a valid password.

After search the knowledge base, I believe that my problem relates to
document Q308402, a glitch in which preinstalled OS's may not properly store
the password information. My OS was preinstalled by Gateway.

I would like to obtain the hot fix described in Q308402, but I'm not sure
how to get it. According to the Microsoft support page, I'm supposed to
contact my PC manufacturer to get support. However, when I contact Gateway,
this is their response:

"Thank you for using Gateway's Online E-mail Support. As you stated to
your e-mail that you need to know about the administrator password and
you need to obtain the patch, the issues you are experiencing are most
likely caused by Microsoft. Your best option at this point is to call
Microsoft, so they can help you troubleshoot this issue. They may have
a simple resolution to this issue. "

All I want to do is obtain the hot fix that is described in Q308402.

Thanks!

I'm not sure that your suggestion applies to my situation. Note that I
never set an Administrator's password, hence I haven't forgotten anything.
The problem is actually a glitch in the log-in routine for the Recovery
Console. According to Q308402:

" This issue may occur if Windows XP was originally installed from a Sysprep
image, or if Sysprep 2.0 was run on the computer at one time. Sysprep.exe
makes changes to the way that password keys are stored in the registry; these
changes are not compatible with the Recovery Console logon routine."

Note that the manufacturer of your computer may have used Sysprep to
preinstall Windows XP on your computer. "

So even if I change (or in my case, create) the administrator password, the
login routine is still going to be looking in the wrong place in the registry.

Provided that you can access Windows:
"Automatic Administrative Logon to Recovery Console"
http://winguides.com/registry/display.php/1289/

Undo that setting when done (security issue).
All I want to do is obtain the hot fix that is described in Q308402.

In order to use that hotfix, the recovery console has to be installed on
the hard drive. Next, that hotfix cannot be installed when having a
WinXP RTM CD while the system has been updated to SP1 or SP2 meanwhile.
You might be better off when applying the registry tweak as mentioned
above.

Here ya go.

The recovery console needs the pasword for the person who installed XP, not
for just any administrator. If the install was done by a major PC maker,
you may need to contact them for it.

However, the password is sometimes blank. So, try just pressing enter when
you are asked for a password, it may help.

Or, if you can get into XP, even safe mode, you can arrange to bypass the
password by the following registry change:

Instead, just run REGEDIT (Start à Run à Regedit)
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\Recover
yConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1

I'm not sure if a reboot is required or not, if this doesn't work at first
then reboot.
