RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALL QUESTION

Sam

I am trying to install the recovery console on my brothers Dell Dimension
8200 computer that has windows XP Pro (SP2) installed. I am using a
slipstreamed (SP2) windows XP Pro CD that I made using MS SP2 CD and the
Dell windows XP Pro CD that came with my computer. When I first received my
new computer, I was able to install the recovery console without any
problems, but don't remember the actual install events or dialog boxes.

When trying to install the recovery console this weekend, the install
appears to go okay with the initial setup dialog box asking for install
confirmation. After I clicked okay, the next dialog box appeared and
indicated (at least to me) that windows XP was being installed on the
computer. I did not
remember this dialog box appearing when I installed the recovery console on
my computer and so I stopped the install since I was not sure if windows XP
was actually being installed on the computer. I should note that the
recovery console install procedure I am using is as follows:

Start/Run/ m:\i386\winnt32.exe/cmdcons.

Any clarification and applicable information would be very much appreciated,
Sam.

P.S. This is a repost since I have not seen my original post sent on 13
March, 2005. I did a search for the original but could not find it. Maybe
because it was sent on the 13th, it was lost in cyberspace!!??

I resonsed to your first post. If you can't find a post search for it
using your name using Google advanced groups search.

Rock, thanks very much for your reply and my apology for missing your reply.
Have a good weekend, Sam.

guys, can you break this down simpler, like 1, 2, 3,

I have no idea how to create a slipstream CD SP2 much less do anything with
it.

and why are you using a google group search on an ms group ?

Why are you responding to a 3 month old thread?

1) because i'm new
2) because i need an answer
3) because i thought you really were here to help

Well, if you're new, you may not realize that a messagae like the one above,
without anything quoted, is meaningless to many of us. Many newsgroup
participants (me, for example) don't save already-read messages and a
message without a quote is likely to be completely unintelligible to people.
I have no idea what you need an answer to.

Ken,

I'm new to XP not message boards. I've earned TeamB emeritus after 10 years
on the boards for them and Novell. We knew not to quote a post since it was
just upstream in the thread and would waste space.

But since you wanted it ...

I need to know how to put a recovery console back into my system. And I
gather tha the answer is making a slipstream SP2 CD and then reinstalling
from there. That should really be in a whole KB article, don't you think ?

Please note that this is a newsgroup, not a message board. You are looking
at the newsgroup using the web-based interface to it (called CDO), but most
of us here don't do that. The web-based interface is the slowest, clunkiest,
most error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a
newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

When you read newsgroups with a newsreader, one of the options you have is
to see all the old messgegs, or to hide or delete them. As I said, many of
us choose to hide or delete them since having fewer messages to look at
greatly speeds up the process of seeing what messages are new in the group
and need answers. If I had to look at all the messages here, instead of
just the new ones, my time in the newsgroups might easily double.

Quoting enough of the message you are replying to to put your message into
perspective is standard newsgroup netiquette. See, for example,
http://www.newsreaders.com/guide/netiquette.html. Perhaps even more
important to those asking for help is that anything they can do to help
those trying to help them works in their favor.

But since you wanted it ...

I need to know how to put a recovery console back into my system. And
I gather tha the answer is making a slipstream SP2 CD and then
reinstalling from there. That should really be in a whole KB article,

There is good information on Slipstreaming SP2 here:

Ken,

While the lawyer in me would love to cite precendent (and I do mean which
came 1st), I'd rather just get the question answered, shall we ?

This is a newsgroup; many of the posters use a newsreader and only
download the newest threads - so we can't see the previous ones. It's
better, if you have a question based on an old thread to post a new one
with all the pertinent information. Also understand everyone who posts
here is a volunteer who post here on their own time to help out.

A simple google search for slipstream+xp+sp2 would have given you the
information you needed. Here are some links on how to do it:

Did you read my message? Besides explaining about newsgroups and quoting, I
answered your question.

Rock,

Thank you kind sir. The important tag word I wasn't seeing was "slipstream"
and how it was done. Now all better. Thanks!

i'll trade you a question for another observation ...

how do you get all these into a newsreader ? I'd like to get them in
bloglines so they'll get into the blogroll at my blog...

the observation .... everything happens for a reason. maybe not your reason,
my reason or a good reason (einstein "God does not play dice with the
universe"). Knowing the reason and correcting for it, without prejudice, put
you back in control and satisfies the client.
