Recovered messages

When I attempted to open my outlook express email account, I was told that
some kind of error happened, but that my messages had been saved in a
recovered messages file. When my inbox opened up, there is a folder now
listed that is called recovered messages with an entry under it of
07-09-2008-16-00-11 The problem is that there aren't any messages in that
folder and there aren't any messages left anywhere in my outlook express.
Everything has been deleted from the inbox, sent and deleted boxes. What
happened (so that I can avoid it in the future) and where are the messages
at? Thanks for your help!

You keep mentioning "outlook express". Are you sure the email program
isn't Windows Mail? We don't support Outlook Express here.

Assuming you meant Windows Mail, it sounds like yours has some serious
problems. That type of problem is typically caused by running a non-
compatible antivirus. Which antivirus do you have?

Frankly, your Windows Mail sounds so corrupted that it probably isn't
worth the time and effort required to fix it. I recommend upgrading to
Windows Live Mail, and hopefully WLM will find and import your
missing messages.

Sorry for the Outlook Express reference! It's just that the Windows mail
looks so much like the Outlook Express that I had on the old computer. It is
Microsoft Windows Version 6; copyright 2006. I have the Norton Antivirus on
my computer, because it was on it when I bought it (the same goes for the
Windows Mail). I have been receiving mail since I posted my original
message, but still can not find the mail that was supposedly recovered. I
have a hotmail account already and did not really want to set up another
email account. Do you think that there is anything that can be done for this
and if not, do you think that this will continue to be a problem. I have
been using this system since May of this year and that is the first time that
I've had any kind of problem with the Mail program. Thanks again for your
help!

Norton antivirus is one of the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
It can take quite a while before symptoms start showing up.
I suggest that, as a test, you uninstall it just to see if that clears the
problem. Follow that up with their debris removal tool:

If you see improvement, we can recommend a more compatible free antivirus.

Another solution is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail because it is
less prone to suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus
programs. Windows Live Mail is not another email account. It is a
newer email program that replaces Windows Mail.

In any case, your antivirus must be configured *not* to scan emails.

Thank you for your help! I am not sure why Norton is installed on computers
with Windows Mail as the program, if it causes so many problems! Anyway, as
I am not very computer smart - I am quite sure that I do not want to attempt
to uninstall the antivirus program and see if that works. I have reset the
norton so that it is not scanning outgoing emails. I did recently send out a
family reunion newsletter and perhaps all of that scanning is what caused the
problem in the first place. I will download the Windows Live, sometime in
the near future. I have dial up, so downloads for me can become a very time
consuming issue..... Thanks again for your assistance and patience in this
matter!
