Receiving mail Problems POP3

I've been having problems with receiving mail for about a month. I've
discovered the problem to be between my ISP mail box and Outlook. When
Outlook starts to receive mail I think it is getting from the ISP Mail server
that I have 187k messages in my inbox. However, when I look in my inbox using
the web browser I only have 12k.

So my question is as follows:

Is the number of messages that are be received kept local on my machine or
does Outlook get a fresh copy about the numbe of messages each time it starts
a to receive messages?

If the number of messages is kept local unitl they are received, how do I
force Outlook to get a fresh copy about the number of message to be received?


I was able to determine my problem by looking the logs created my outlook.

Yes, and yes. Outlook (and all POP clients) keeps a record of what messages
it has downloaded, comparing what's called a UIDL from the server with a
list of the UIDLs of the messages already downloaded. If the UIDL doesn't
copmpare, the message is new.

If there were a way to get the server to regenerate the UIDLs, they'd
download as new. However, I don't know how that can be done.

Would un-installing and re-installing OutLook solve this problem? Which i
really don't want to do, but if this is the solution I will.

Maybe I should contact Microsoft over the telephone to get help?

No need to reinstall. Create a new mail profile and set it up to access the
same account. Outlook should then think it has never downloaded the
messages and start afresh. You can even use the existing PST in the new
profile if you wish.

I tried you suggestion and deleted that OutLook profile and created a new
one. I'm still getting the same results.

How can I get pass this issue?

How did you create the new one? Did you use Control Panel>Mail>Show
Profiles>Add?

The log file now shows me that I have 190k. Can you tell me what's happing?

Do you mean to say that you have 12,000 messages (which is what 12k means)
on your server? Are you sure you're not mistaking the sizes being
downloaded for the number of messages? A 12k message makes much more sense
to me than 12k different messages...

things in synch. Outlook just sets and hange trying to receive 190k messages
that don't exist. Any input would be helpful.

With an ISP I used to have, every time I would log into the web mail tool,
the webmail tool would copy the mail store to a separate area on the
server's disks (acting like a POP client, but leaving the messages in the
POP server's message store), making a copy of the message store that was
independent of the store used by the POP server. I could download and
delete messages with a POP client and it would not affect what appeared in
webmail. Likewise, I could manipulate the webmail mesages and it wouldn't
affect the pop client. At times it was a little confusing.

My goodness. And to think I'd thought I'd seen large mailboxes...

A question: You say that when you go to your mailbox via your Web browser
you see 12K messages. Does *that* number make sense? That would be right
up there with the larger inboxes I've seen... If that really is how many
messages are there, do you really want all of them left on the server? You
might want to select one of the options for deleting messages from the
server (remove when deleting from Deleted Items, delete after N days) to
clean your mailbox.

As to your problem, the logs show that Yahoo's server is telling Outlook
that has 190513 messages, so Outlook is dutifully trying its best to deal
with that - it has to believe the server. Note that this number of
messages is about an order of magnitude greater than anything I suspect
we've ever tested for.

What you're seeing is almost certainly a bug in Yahoo's POP3 server, so you
should contact them about what is going on with your mailbox. My guess is
that, if you really do have 12K messages, their POP3 server just doesn't
know how to cope with that many.
