Rearrange Desktop Icons

When I ran W98SE (the good old days!), desktop icons could easily be
arranged in any order.

In W2K, the icon layout is basically fixed, difficult to change.

Is there a (no-install preferred) utility that will allow this in W2K/XP?

Beg to differ.

Right Click on Desktop>Arrange Icons -- uncheck anything that's checked.
Now you can put 'em anywhere you want. Use Line up Icons to neaten 'em
up.

Beg to differ too:

Not necessary to uncheck everything, just unchecking "Auto arrange"
under the "Arrange Icons" submenu is more than enough! Be sure to
restart W2K after you've rearranged the icons the way you want them,
then this setup is written to the registry, and a crash should not
restore your previous lay out!

Thanks to both of you, it worked fine, rebooted to check and my settings
held.

Both of you seem familiar with W2K.

I can't change file icons using Options/File Types. I can change the file
association, but there seems to be no option I see to change the file icon.

It was easy in W98SE.

Advice?

Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types tab>Advanced button>Change Icon
button.

Mark, that was a better answer than I got on the MS W2K ng from "experts".

I use 2XExplorer in W2K so it has the same appearance as I had in W98SE.

Thanks,
