Message Display problem with Outlook 2003. New messages come in showing bold
type and as unread, after a varying amount of time without any user
intervention they change to normal type and the envelope changes to indicate
that the message has been read. The system is XP Pro SP2 and all of the
latest updates. Office has been uninstalled and reinstalled twice and all
updates applied. Outlook is using cashed mode from an Exchange 2003 Server
SP2 on local network. Only one computer on the network is having the problem,
of course it used by the president of the company. The system has been
scanned by two different Anti-Virus programs showing no viruses or worms
detected. Using OWA also shows the messages as read, so the read property
change is being sent back to the exchange server.

You have some add-in scanning your messages, either on the Outlook client or
on the Exchange server, that is causing this.

Hello,

Thank you for posting here!

I agree with Brian that the issue is most likely caused by some third-party
add-ins which is scanning your email message. Brian, thank you for your
experience sharing! As to the current status, please perform the steps
below to narrow down the problem.

1. Try to log this specific user account on another computer and then
connect to the Exchange server to test the issue again. Please also double
check whether the unread emails are marked as read in OWA on the
problematic computer without logging Outlook before. This can help us to
identify whether the issue is actually related to the Exchange mailbox or
specific Outlook client.

2. Please follow the steps below to check whether this issue is related to
the conflicts between Outlook and some third party add-ins.

(1) Start Outlook and click Tools -> Options.
(2) On the Other tab, click Advanced Options...
(3) Click Add-In Manager... and COM Add-Ins...
(4) Click to clear all the checkboxes in the list.
(5) Click OK three times to close the Options.
(6) Restart Outlook to test the issue again.

3. Please also test Outlook in the Safe Mode for a period of time. The Safe
Mode will disable all add-ins or extensions that will not start, or a
corrupted resource, file, registry, or templates.

Click Start-->Run, type "Outlook /Safe" (Quotation marks are not included
and there is a space between Outlook and /safe) and press Enter.

4. Please temporarily uninstall all the firewalls and antivirus programs in
the problematic client side, and refer to the following Knowledge Base
articles to make sure you have configured antivirus program correctly in
the Exchange 2003 Server side.

5. It is reported that many similar issues are caused by the Blackberry.
Therefore, if you have involved Blackberry with Exchange Server, I suggest
you temporarily disable the message being sent to Blackberry or uninstall
the Blackberry to test the issue again. In the meantime, double check
whether you install any third-party programs with Exchange Server.

Please don't hesitate to let me know in case you have any further updates.
Have a nice day!

MrMac,
Was it a third party add-in causing your issue. If so, would you be able to
tell me what it was as i have a user with the same issue and need assistance.
Thanks.
