unread messages show as read in imap

Using outlook 2003 for years with pop setup and no problems. Switched to imap
setup and now new messages are showing up as "read" when they have not been
read. The messages come in fine (i.e unread shows bold) but after a couple
minutes they spontaneousely change themselves to "read". The amount of time
seems to vary randomly, and it usually happens when I am not looking.

Have confirmed that preview pane is fully turned off in tools>other>reading
pane.

Tried it downloading headers only and downloading complete message.

Have turned off my third party spam add in. Turned off my symantec virus
scanner. Tried starting outlook in safe mode.

Any suggestions?

It could be an artifact of the IMAP server, too. It's difficult to say.
Outlook isn't the most robust IMAP client. What are your send/receive
settings for the IMAP account? Are you subscribed to any of the folders? Do
you have any rules? Do you have a desktop search program?
