Read-only document

Nina

I have a document that I revised at some point in the past and just now
noticed that it opens as read-only. The document is protected for "filling
in forms" only. The "Read only" check box in the Properties dialog box is
checked; however, the selection is not active (grayed-out). Where can I
check for and change this setting so the file will not open as read-only? I
am using Word 2003.

Hi Nina,

When you protect a document for forms, only the formfields and any material you specifically place in an unprotected Section (via
the use of Section breaks) remain editable. If your document has multiple Sections, you can specify which Sections not to protect
when activating the protection.

Hi macropod,

Thanks for responding. There are no section breaks in this document, and
the field protections work fine. The problem is that the file opens as
read-only, so noted by the words "(Read-Only)" following the filename at the
top of the window. I am just looking for guidance as to where I should go to
check for and change this setting in my document.

Incidentally, if I do a File... Save As, the file saves as read-write, which
is a workaround but for future reference, I like to know where the read-only
setting can be selected or deselected.

Hi Nina,

That suggests the file might have been copied from a CD. You can change the read only attribute via Windows Explorer. Simply select
the file, right-click, choose Properties and uncheck the 'read only' box.

Thanks so much, macropod. That was it.

I kept trying to clear the Read only check box in the Properties dialog box
when the file was open, which obviously didn't work.

Thanks again for your help.
