Word 2007 documents close as "read only"

OS: Windows 7
Frequent Occurence
In Word 2007, I work on an existing document and then try to close it. I can
only "save it as" with a different name because, Word claims, it is a "read
only" document. I look at its properties and "read only" is not checked.
After I save it with different name, I look at the (closed) original
document's properties and, still, the "read only" box is not checked. All
these documents are in the main drive.
Any help will be appreciated.

In researching this problem, I see a number of possible causes:

1. The Preview pane in Windows Explorer is open. Because WE uses Word to
display the file, that locks the file against changes you make using Word,
which means you'd need to save it under a different name.

2. You don't have sufficient permissions in the folder where the file is
located. You would then need to save the file to a different location, such
as My Documents, to which permission is automatically given.

3. The file being edited is stored on removable media.

4. Some antivirus software have an Office or Word plug-in that sometimes
cause this issue. The plug-in isn't essential for a/v operation, but
provides some additional layer of protection. Turning off the feature
sometimes cause the problem to go away.

5. The Allow Background Saves (Word Options - Advanced - Save subsection)
sometimes seems to cause this issue, reportedly. I've never seen this,
though, and it's hard to see how it could. Still... when grasping at straws.

Let me know if any of these seem to be causing your particular problem.

Herb:
Thank you very much for your suggestions. I will check them out over the
w/end. I am the only user of this computerand the files in question are
stored in My Documents.
Thanks again,
