Reaching a Website by Using IP Address

C

I had been told, in another newsgroup, that my question could be
answered here.

I know that I can reach a website by pointing my browser at either its
dns address (http://www.domain.com) or its IP address
(http://00.00.00.00). But, that works only if that website is the only
one at that IP address.

If there are multiple sites hosted at that same IP address, how do I
attach the domain name to the IP address in the address field so that I
point to the correct path on that host?

Http://00.00.00.00/domainname does not work.
In other words, if a site neglects to renew its domain name or if there
is a problem with the domain name server, can I reach the site at the
host server directly by bypassing the dns and pointing my browser at the
IP when there is more than one site at that IP?

I am not trying to reach a specific website at this time. I want to know
what will work in all cases. After all, a dns resolves the domain name
to an IP and then browsers send the request to the IP using that dns
mapping information, right? I want to retrieve that mapping
information, even though its format may be different for different
hosts.

Whoever told you that did you a disservice. "Here" is a Windows XP
newsgroup. Your question is completely independent of Windows XP, and
depends on the way Internet routing works.
comp.infosystems.www.servers.misc would be a better choice, though I
won't guarantee it's the best choice.

Not quite right. The IP address goes to the root site as designated
in the server that answers at that address.

You'd need to know the internal directory structure of the server --
and the server would need to be configured badly.

What are you _actually_ trying to accomplish?
