Re-installation problems

I had to re-install windows xp home edition on my laptop, all was going well
untill the process gets to 34 minutes remaining and my screen goes blank,
I've left it for 15 minutes each time I've re-started the process with the
same outcome each time, any help with this would be very welcome.
