Re-install Windows?

Intel Pentium 4, 2.4 Ghz
512 MB RAM
80 Gig memory

Hello people,

i'm having trouble with using my Windows XP Home Edition for a couple of
weeks now. Using IE or Firefox takes a couple of minutes to load, same with
Words, some websites applications take minutes to finish etc.
My guess is to re-install XP and all the other basic softwares like
Anti-virus, Firewall, Words etc. to it's initialsystem configuration. I know
it's kind of a basic issue for every pc user, but it's a first for me. I have
scanned my computer a million times (literally), did an Ad-Aware scan (dito)
and have deleted my temporary internet files aswell. They dont seen to have
any impact. Only thing left for me to do is a re-install or whatever.

My questions are what are the best sollutions for me to undertake and what
are the risks and issues i need to check before i actually go reconfigurate
my system?
Do i need to make a copy of my HD? How can i do that when i only have one HD?

I undestand that the problem could lay in the system itself. I can
assure you though that the basic system that essentially was installed was at
an high level.
I think the problem lays with the fact that i'm an 'regular' websurfer.
Basically saying that my system got 'invaded' by an unwanted program. That's
why i want to get it back to it's first state.

First be advised that the 512 MB RAM is your system's memory and the 80 Gigs
is your system's hard drive size. People seem to confuse storage space with
memory and often call it that.

You might try posting a description of your problem to the forum here
http://aumha.net/ These folks know their stuff and can guide you through an
examination of what might be installed on your computer that causes
performance problems.

Before you do a clean install remember to back up your important data to
removable storage like CD-R or DVD. What is important to you only you can
decide. Ensure you have your Windows Product Key, and other software
serial/registration numbers on hard copy somewhere. Some folks get into the
middle of a reinstall and realize that they can't find their Product Key so
they are really in trouble. What type of restore process are you going to
use? Do you have an actual Windows XP Home Edition CD or did you receive a
Restore CD or Recovery CD from the manufacturer?

Hi, I would thinkyou should run a virus scan, check for spyware and then
check to see if you have something you should't have running at startup(use
msconfig) Hope this helps
