RDP won't connect, no error msg

Suddenly RDP won't connect. I'm running two machines on WinXP SP3 32-bit,
and suddenly, yesterday, RDP won't connect.

I don't get any error message, RDP just blinks "Connecting to
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" and then dissapears without any error message. I've tried
three different computers (all running WinXP SP3), and none of them
connecting to this one specific host. These clients can connect to each
other via RDP without any problem.

I've checked the event log on the problematic server, but there is no clue
as to what can be the problem. I've also tried to reboot this server, but
there is no improvment.

It could be MTU issue. This search result may help.
connection to remote computer was broken caused by network error
If the Remote Desktop screen comes up black and then you receive this
error, you may need test and modify the MTU. These links may help, ...

Afraid not, it has been working flawlessy for weeks, and without any apparnt
changes/updates, it stopped working at all. I don't get any error messages,
the client just blinks "Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" and then dissapears
without any error message.

I'm having the exact same issue. I don't think it happened right after
installing SP3 for XP so that shouldn't be the issue. And, frankly, VNC
sucks so I want my RDC back x.x Anyone have any other ideas?

I want to vomit. I've been having the same problem for weeks and had no
idea what the problem was. I've been chasing rabbits all this time,
thinking it was SP3, my router, some software on my system (other than
the damned video drivers), or the alignment of the planets.

Makes me feel like killing someone.

But not you--to YOU I am grateful.

I am also having the same problem. Could someone please update the link or
simply copy and paste what WAS in that link into this forum?

The last three threads that solved this problem all have dead links to the
solution! Apparently there is one but we need the solution posted in this
thread not a link. PLEASE!

Thanks

I found some posts on the Community forums that indicated MSKB#957097 may
cause this problem, however this was not the case for me.

I did discover that it was caused by nVidia Forceware drivers 178.24 which
is especially irritating considering they were WHQL approved.

I uninstalled and loaded the latest 180.48 instead and the problem is
resolved.

Oh, thank you! We have an nVidia GeForce 8500 GT card and I updated the
driver to 181.22 and that fixed the problem. Thanks so much!

Yes, I know how you feel. I was trying different things: uninstalling IE7, reinstalling, deleting the registry keys, etc.. I even did a spyware scan :-(

Finally I found your comment and updated the drivers of my NVidia GeForce 7300 LE. Then it worked. The problem causing this must be a windows update; remote desktop worked fine before and my machine has always had SP3. I usually don't install anything on that machine. I discard the hardware updates from MS 'cause they drivers have caused me a lot of problems.

Dammn, I don't know why they can't just display an error message telling you that there is something wrong with the video. Instead of this, no error will be logged nor displayed :-(

Thank you anyway.
