RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP - Crashes

G

Guest

Windows Explorer crashes now I've installed RAW Image Thumbnailer.

If I view a folder of jpgs and/or RAWS its fine (from my EOS 5D if that's
relevant).

But if I view a folder of files from my Canon Ixus 550/750 (a mix of avi's,
jpgs, THMs, a a file called ZbThumbnail.info) - I can see the files but then
I immediately get a "Data Execution Prevention" window pop-up. My computer
then shuts down Windows Explorer. I then send the error report in.

This happens whether the view is details, thumbnails, list, etc.

Is there a patch or workaround?

Thanks.

Hello,

What you're seeing is a feature of your hardware that is supported with
Windows XPSP2 and Server 2003 SP1 that is designed to prevent malicious code
from running and damaging your files or system even more. See the article
at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352 for more info.

But the question as to what is causing DEP to trigger is another question.
It could be something that Explorer is trying to show a thumbnail of. Maybe
that zbthumbnail.info file... I looked for information on it but I couldn't
find any. Do you know what that is from? Can you set Explorer to use
something other than thumbs and see if that helps?

Thanks,
Gregg Rivers [MSFT]

Hi Gregg, sorry for the delay - just found your follow-up post.

I understand the behaviour better now:

It's avi files which cause it. (One test needed: just avi's from my Canon
IXUS camera, or any?).

If I view a folder with these avi's as anything other than thumbnails,
Explorer is OK. If I doubleclick a file, I get the DEP occuring. If I look
at the folder as thumbnails, that also triggers the DEP. So it seems to be
the interaction with the avi's via Explorer that causes the problem, not just
the fact of avi's in the folder.

Any ideas?

Thx,

Gavin.

Hi Gavin,

Ok, so just AVIs, that's at least narrowing it down a bit. What program is
associated with AVIs? To find out, open an explorer window, click
Tools->Folder Options, click the File Types tab and find AVI. Click AVI in
the list and look down at the bottom and let us know what program is listed.
If it's anything other than Windows Media Player, try changing it to Windows
Media Player and see if that helps.
Another thing to try is to open the folder where the AVIs are and delete
thumbs.db. The next time you view the folder as Thumbnails, it will be
recreated.

Let us know how that goes.

Hi Gregg,

Apologies again for long delay...

OK, File type AVI was set to MS Media Player - so it's not some erroneous
app association.

I deleted the THMs and still got the DEP.

Also, I retested my hypothesis that the crash only happened when the avi's
were interacted with in some way - i.e. when looking at the folder in
thumbnails view or details view.

But I was wrong - even when in plain old 'list' view, the DEP occurs.

I checked the behaviour against older avi's created by my previous camera (a
Sony P!) and still get the same behaviour.

For what it's worth, when I check the file type associations, I have lots of
apps associated against (NONE).

Any further help much appreciated.

Gavin.

Hi Gavin,

Did you delete thumbs.db? If not, try that.
Also, try checking the option to "Do not cache thumbnails" on the Folder
Options, View tab (Tools->Folder Options in your explorer window).
What programs have been installed recently or at least before you started
experiencing this problem? Anything that can play AVIs? Any other Windows
utilities, anti-virus programs, or other utilities?

Hi Gregg,

OK, I deleted any thumbs.db I could find in the directory. No change.

I also checked 'don't cache thumbnails'. No change.

The last program I installed which I can think of is RAW thumbnailer - hence
posting in this forum. But I uninstalled that to see if the problem went
away - no change. (I reinstalled it.)

The problem is definitely AVI related. Directories without AVI's open fine.
The problem seems to be present if the directory view is anything other than
'list' view. If any attributes of the AVI are processed (to generate a
thumbnail, or to list its 'attributes', for example), then the DEP occurs.

The problem is driving me crazy now as I'm trying to process a bunch of
files from my camera from holiday - AVIs and RAWs and JPGs, etc. Every 5
minutes the DEP occurs. I submit most reports to MS, but because it wants to
send an enormous set of data with it, that takes 10 minutes or so.

I checked my files associations. AVIs are associated with MS Media Player,
but there are a bunch of [NONE]'s associated with programs which I don't seem
to be able to clean up.

I looked up the error inmy system log file, here is what it says:

"Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x02b4a710.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

To summarise, I don't think the problem is related to RAW viewer, just
circumstantially started happening around the time I installed it.

Any further help greatly appreciated.

Gavin.

I had the same problem with a PhotoImpact file crashing when a
thumbnail was being displayed. Removal of the thumbnail renderer for
photoimpact fixed the problem. In your case, use the registry editor
and go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi\Shellex and delete the
"{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} " key. See
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/0600/w2kui2/default.aspx> or
search microsoft.com for "BB2E617C shellex". The thumbnails won't be
seen, but you won't crash when they are rendered (which is a real pain
when you just want to use the file save dialog to save a file and then
lose all your work).

Hello everyone,

I have the very same problem and I think it's related to the size of
the movie clip: in my case it's with the canon A610 model.

all other movie clips, say with 40 or 50MB size play just fine with
"windows media player", however my file with a 99 MB size gives the
following error message ( I was very careful in copying the exact
string of numbers/letters:

Explorer.exe - application error
The instruction at "0x0406e0b3 referenced memory at "0x04752000".
The memory could not be "read"
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program

I have tried and retried to see if I could get it to play, but to no
avail.
could it be with the plugins for media player????? there are at least 7
of those recommended by microsoft. I am adding nothing for now.

Are you running WMP 10?

Sounds like the file may be corrupted.

Can you play it in Movie Maker? Or
on a different computer?

If the file is still on your memory card...
try downloading it to your hard drive

Also, it may help to do some maintenance:

Hi - thanks for the suggestion. I'm a bit nervous about going near the
Registry - so many warnings about it... bit phobic now!

Also, I really like the thumbnail view in Explorer. Is there any less
impactful way to resolve this issue?

I'm sure its down to the accessing by Explorer of avi's. The crash is
triggered whenever Explorer lists an avi file in the folder in any other mode
than 'list'.

So its not just thumnail view, but Details view too, which is why I think
its the generic file access that's the trigger, and not just the thumbnail
rendering.

Any other iodeas still welcome because its really a limittaion for my
computer now. I have to use Canon's Zoom Browser to check folders before
opening them with Explorer. Total pain.

Thanks

Gavin.
