Viewing thumbnails of Nikon D300 RAW image (NEF) files in Windows

I shoot with a Nikon D300, and use Aperture on my Mac and Lightroom on my PC
to process the photos. I recently found the Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer
and Viewer for Windows XP[1] and installed it, hoping that it would allow me
quickly to view Nikon NEF files in Windows Explorer.

Unfortunately, it does not work. The program has not been updated since
December 2005, and is unable to handle the NEF files from my camera. The
Viewer program simply displayed "Generating preview" forever, and the Windows
Explorer shell extension is unable to generate thumbnail images for the
files, (despite keeping open indefinitely a file handle pointing to the first
NEF file encountered in a directory viewed in Thumbnail view).

Is there an updated version of this program, or another program that will
properly display thumbnails for NEF files from a D300?
