Radeon 9250: Should I upgrade to Catalyst 5.1? from 4.8?

I am starting to work with Pinnacle studio box to capture the video
from my VHS and convert to avi or to burn to DVD movie. Right now I
have a Radeon 9250 with Catalyst 4.8. I have always heard that you
should occasionally check for updated drivers and download the latest
drivers. But on the ATI site it mentions that you should not
upgrade unless you have hardware problems. Also, if I upgraded to
Catalyst 5.1, is that the same thing as updating my video drivers
(6.14.10.6467, date 8/3/2004)? Or is Catalyst just the program for
the video settings. Thanks

Not updating, unless to cure a problem or gain extra functionality is a
reasonable stance.
Perhaps refer to the driver read me to assertain what is changed/updated
The catalyst drivers contain all the nvidea drivers

Catalyst is ATI's name for their drivers and the only benefit of upgrading
drivers on that card would be with games in which case I would install the
4.12s as the most stable/compatible driver for that card. But if youre not a
gamer and just concern yourself with Video work I dont believe you'd see any
benefit so don't bother.

I am getting Dopped frames on Pinnacle studio and updating the video
drivers was one of 8 possible culprits for this problem.

Why not go to the pinnacle studio forums ?. Here`s just one of them.

Catalyst is just ATIs name for their drivers as Nvidia calls their drivers
'Detonators'.
Catalyst does NOT contain Nvidia drivers (pure bullshit).
When you convert VHS to AVI files you use your TV card (Pinnacle) and do not
involve your graphics card at all. The only time you involve your 9250 in
this is when you playback the AVI on your monitor (or TV using the SVHS
output). Dont bother changing the graphics card driver for the purpose you
specify. If you play games on your PC I would recommend upgrading to the
Catalyst 4.12 drivers but nothing newer.
