can I use Radeon 9250 with Win98?

I wish to put a new AGP graphics card in my wife's computer, with Win98.
A game addict friend said to me that Microsoft have dropped support
for this long time ago, so manufacturers also won't support Win98
anymore. He suggested I would need an old Catalyst driver from
the days when ATI would have tested Win98, but that is probably
before the 9250 came out.
Is anybody using a 9250 with Win98 (not 98SE either)?

Good luck. Windows 98 (original, not Second Edition) exclusively uses
VXD drivers, unlike Windows 98 SE which also uses WDM drivers. You'll
need to find a VXD set of drivers for the card.

It's ATI that decided not to support Win98, not MS.

You've got it a bit wrong. Go to ATi pages and fake you are in need of a
driver set. Thru some simple questions (like about your OS) you'll be
guided to the set you would download, if you really were there to do it,
if you know what I mean %-)

The driver set for 98(SE) is not (any more) the newest one, but probably
it is newer than the one I'm currently running. I have some personal
interest on this as my wife's primary work machine at home is a P3 1GHz
running Win98SE and Radeon 7500. No whining here, I know what I'm doing.
But I'm not so sure she does :)

what kind of board is in the system

it has all-in-one mainboard with S3G Unichrome, which doesn't support
DXT compression, hence want to try the Radeon.
Also have a TNT2, (which works even with Win95, being so old)

The Atitech.com find a driver page for my aiw 7500 / win98se system
downloads catalyst 5.9 and mmc 8.9 software.

Its been trouble free for me. :))

pasted this from the readme file.

Actually, contradicting the naysayers, according to ATi's release notes, the
WinME driver supports both Win98 and Win98SE:
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/Catalyst_59_ME_release_notes.html

So go ahead and download the latest Catalyst drivers for WinME off
www.ati.com . It's up to version 5.9, less than two months old.

FYI: nVidia's drivers still support Win*95*, so I guess it's not difficult
to develop a unified set of drivers for all Win9x versions, even if there
are differences.
