quicken won't backup

Quicken 2002 will no longer backup onto my CD-R or CD-RW. I get an error immediately (instantly) saying Unable to access the disk in drive E. Please make sure the drive is ready and the disk is not write protected. It seems the computer isn't even trying to access the drive, the led never comes on. The drive works outside of quicken. How to you write protect a cd? I created a file folder on the disk to store the quicken backup. When I right click on the file folder to check properties it comes up read only. If I uncheck the read only box and apply, close the properties window then re-open the properties window the read only box is checked again. Anybody please help before I throw my computer out the window.
