I add the Quick Launch task bar each time I log-in and if
I log out or reboot/shutdown it vanishes again.

I have tried creating a ClasicShell entry in the
registry, tried setting classic view etc and it still
vanishes after a reboot/log-out.

Does anyone know how I can get this taskbar to remain on
display by default?

Help, it is driving me crazy.

Problem solved thanks to Ramesh [MVP] and Jay's discussion

The key userinit in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] had been changed to wsaupdater.exe
from userinit.exe ("C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,")

Many thanks!

Any idea what replaced it with this value?

This can either be a symptom of having spyware on your system or a
problem *after* removing spyware. Here is some information from MVP

Look under "Q" for "Quick Launch".

Quick Launch: Won't remain checked/present nor retains the sort order

Either check your settings here:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)
