Quick Launch Icons problem

L

Linda

Previously, whenever I added an icon for a program shortcut on the Quick
Launch portion of the taskbar, it always remained in the same position, as
first placed, amongst the other icons sitting there.

Now, the latest two icons I have added to the Quick Launch always appear at
the end of the group of icons after a reboot, despite being subsequently
moved after each reboot to the required place on the Quick Launch.

Can anyone, please, suggest how I can get the icons to remain in the
position they are placed.

Thanks

Linda

Seen that myself. Usually I "Unlock" the Quicklaunch, rearrange the
icons and then lock the bar. Then do a logout/login to verify placement
is "Sticky". Right Click the bar to access lock/unlock.

Open the folder containing these shortcuts by placing cursor in Quick Launch
where it DOES NOT highlight (raised box around) an icon. Right click, then
select "open folder". Where is the triangle along the bar just below the
buttons under the menu bar ? If other than in "Name" column, click there to
place the triangle there. Down-pointing sorts z to a; up-pointing sorts a
to z. Click there again to select your preference for sort order. I have
shortcuts, an internet shortcut, and an Explorer command in mine, all sorted
by name. With above procedure, mine stay as wanted.

Thanks, Malv, for your suggestion but it doesn't work for me.
All it does is to sort the icons in the folder obtained by "open folder". It
has no effect on the way the icons are displayed in the Quick Launch portion
of the taskbar.
Anyway I don't want the icons to be arranged by Name/Size/ Type/ or
Modified. I want them to display in an haphazard way that I select.
This used to be the way I could do it but for some reason it does not work
any more.
The old icons appear as I want them to be but the problem is with new icon
shortcuts that I place on the Quick Launch portion of the taskbar.
They always appear at the end of the line of icons being displayed, not
where they were placed originally.
And despite moving them to where I want them, the next reboot places them
once again at the end of the line of icons.

Drag&Drop doesn't work for you inside the Quick Launch?

Hello Redwood.
No.
It has always been my practice to create a shortcut on the desktop and then
to "drag and drop" onto the Quick Launch portion of the toolbar, finishing
up with the icon on the specific place of the line of icons I want it to
appear.
But as I said earlier both the latest shortcut icons always appear at the
end of the line after a reboot, not where I originally placed them.
This never happened previously; the icons always stopped where I first
placed
them.
Puzzling?

A couple of questions, Linda, which one of the MVP's may pick up on:
-What are the problem icons to or for ? (shortcuts, internet shortcuts,
etc.)
-Do you remember doing anything (besides adding the last two items) just
before this problem started, like installing a new program, drivers, even
hardware ? Something may have gotten changed by these, if done.

Someone has an answer.

Hi Linda,

Arrange them the way you like, then run line 54 - Save Settings on
Exit: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Good luck and keep us posted.
Hello Kelly,
Thanks for your reply.
But I am confused.
I download the msi.reg and run it to put the entries in the Registry by
Start Menu\Run\msi.reg. Yes?
That's all I do, the Quick Launch settings will then be saved on the next
close down of my system?
If that is correct, then it does not work for me because the two icons in
question are back at the end of the line, when I reboot, not where I put
them.

Then perhaps you need to do this:

Open Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab, select "Remember each
folder's view settings". Also try the following, which will increase
the number of folders view settings cached.

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2)

move the icons to where you want them and then right click and click on LOCK the Taskbar.

I didn't mean Drag&Drop from Desktop, I meant inside the Quick Launch it's
self. When you have more than three program, you get a double arrow for the
others. Your still able to do a Drag&Drop with your Quick Launch Icons. If
you already tried this then i'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
