Jim

This week my Quick Launch toolbar began to vanish every
time I reboot. I can make it appear (sorted,
unfortunately), but it vanishes again when I restart.
This seems to have started when I last ran windows
update. Does anyone know a fix for this?

I tried several solutions from Kelly's page, but nothing
fixed the problem.

Anyone else have a syggestion?

And are you running the very latest version of Taskbar Plus! (v1.1.0.1, 16
Jul-04)?

Jim,

It's caused by a malware BlazeFind. Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
In the right-pane, change the value of Userinit to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,"

Type the above value exactly as given (change the drive-letter/path if different in your system), including the comma - exclude the quotes. Close Registry Editor and restart Windows. The Quick Launch settings should be retained now.

Either check your settings here:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)

Tip:

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double click the vbs
file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

Try this it worked for me

In Registry Editor (Start > Run... > regedit), navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Name: Userinit

Data: %system32%\wsaupdater.exe,

%system32% represents the path to the System32 folder. For example, if
the path is C:\Windows\System32, then the data would be

C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

Instead of wsaupdater.exe, the data should contain userinit.exe,.
Using the example above, the data would be

C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,

Do not forget to add the comma at the end.

Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer. Problem solved.
